Pastoral Note—Ministry Expansion Update
Dear Cornerstone Family,
If you are a Cornerstone member, you received an important expansion update on Thursday this week. In case you missed that communication, the update is below:
Our proposed expansion plan to build a larger sanctuary behind the building next door, the Corn House (203 3rd Avenue South), came before the downtown historic zoning commission this week. Unfortunately, we did not receive the answer we hoped to receive. The historic zoning commission denied our request for the proposed expansion. We are exploring other potential avenues with the city, but as things stand currently, the Corn House expansion opportunity is closed.
While the answer is disappointing, our hope remains strong (Psalm 33:20-22). The Lord has not changed. His promises have not changed. His purposes for his church have not changed. And we can trust that his will is good, wise, and perfect, even when it does not match up with our desires.
I especially want to ask you to pray for our Ministry Expansion Team. They worked diligently and faithfully the past several months, carrying much of the burden of this process. Whenever you’ve put significant work into a project that does not materialize, it’s disappointing. Pray for their hearts to rest in God’s good providence as they continue to seek opportunities for Cornerstone’s future expansion.
In a moment like this, it’s good for us to remember that the church of Jesus Christ does not depend on buildings. We are the household of God, “built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone” (Ephesians 2:20). We will continue to seek the Lord’s wisdom and direction regarding expansion, but our hope is in Christ, the sure and certain anchor (Hebrews 6:19).

“Father, we know that you work all things for the good of those who love you and are called according to your purpose. Though this news is difficult, we do not despair. In good times and hard times, when doors open and when doors close, you are good, and we trust you. Thank you that your church is not ultimately made of bricks and mortar, but of living stones built upon Jesus Christ, our Cornerstone. Give encouragement to those who have labored faithfully, wisdom for the days ahead, and peace to our congregation as we look in faith to your direction. Help us to trust you, to rejoice in your goodness, and to remain faithful to the mission you have given us. Lead us, Good Shepherd. Amen.”
