Worship Notes and Buletin for Sunday, February 9, 2014

In the season of Epiphany, we celebrate the gift of Christ to all of the world and the light of the knowledge of Christ bringing hope and redemption. In our passage from Luke 16, Christ teaches about stewardship, generosity, the love of God more than money, wisdom, and shrewdness.We are called into worship by the invitation from Psalm 135 to give praise to the Lord for we are His possession. With Come. Christians, Join to Sing, the hymns continues this call to praise with heart and voice our God whose love will never end. We continue with Ye Servants of God and praise for His great salvation.

The New Testament Reading from I Timothy 6 calls us to “Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness,” and to not set our hopes on the uncertainty of riches but on God. The Prayer of Confession from James 3 confesses our following of worldly wisdom that seeks after personal ambition instead of being full of mercy seeking a harvest of righteousness. In Come. Ye Souls we sing of the mercy that comes from Christ alone, His wisdom that guides our feet, and the easy yoke of sweet obedience.

Our final hymn, Be Thou My Vision, is a prayer for guidance and leading including that God would be our wisdom and that we would not be turned aside by the riches or empty praise of this life. The response to the Benediction, May You Be Strong, is an antiphonal version of Colossians 1:10-11. Women and men alternate in singing the exhortation to be strong in His power in His service and in giving thanks.
