Worship Notes for Sunday, November 10, 2013

Jesus gives his followers a lesson on humble generosity in the passage from Luke 14 that we will consider this morning. Part of the reason that we can give generously from a place of humility is the recognition of all that we have been given. We begin with the Introit—To You, O God, We Render Thanks. The Call to Worship from Psalm 81 concentrates on the Lord’s promise to feed His people with the finest wheat and with honey from the rock. We sing of this blessing and our own recognition for the need for His grace in Come, Thou Fount and in Glory Be to God the Father. The New Testament Reading from James 2 highlights the unfortunately common sins of honoring the values of the world instead of the values of the Kingdom to which we are heirs. The Prayer of Confession from Psalm 81 confronts the all too normal practice of bowing to the idols of our own hearts instead of walking in His ways with what He values. We continue with Jesus, Thou Joy of Loving Hearts and our desire to feast on Christ and be filled with His desires alone.

Our Communion Hymns include the Psalm for November: O Lord Most High and Come, Ye Disconsolate as we pray for the healing of heaven that comforts our wounded heart and blesses our sorrows. The final hymn, Shepherd of Souls, continues the imagery of feasting with Christ as the sustaining and transforming Bread of Life.
