Worship Notes for Sunday, October 20, 2013

Jesus teaches us this morning about the nature of the Kingdom of God. We’ll explore this theme through our hymns and readings. From Psalm 145 for the Call to Worship, we speak of God as our King and the “glory of His Kingdom” which is an everlasting Kingdom. We continue by singing Jesus Shall Reign and Ye Servants of God. Both hymns speak of the reign of Christ and the glorious nature of His Kingdom.The Old Testament Reading from Psalm 72 gives a picture of what the Kingdom of God looks like—deliverance of the needy, defense of the poor, justice, and dominion from sea to sea. The Prayer of Confession from Ephesians 4 reminds us that too often we long for our own kingdoms instead of living in submission to Christ’s Kingdom. We respond by singing Psalm 67: O God, to Us Show Mercy that speaks of His holy way being made known on the earth with all the peoples praising Him and fearing His name.

For our Communion Hymns we will continue to sing our Psalm for October—Psalm 42: As Pants the Deer, speaking of our desire for the living God and His ways, and Rock of Ages, that reminds us of our utter dependence on Christ in being able to come to Him. Our final hymn, Mighty Lord, Extend Your Kingdom, is a prayer that the glorious Gospel would spread throughout the ends of the earth for the glory of God and His Kingdom.
