Worship Notes for Sunday, September 29, 2013

Abiding in Christ brings us to a point where the joy that Christ has is now in us. He gives us His joy so that our joy may be complete and full. We come into His presence with the Call to Worship from Psalm 66 and 32 and a shout of joy to God for we are glad in Him and rejoice in His name. Our voices continue in the words of Rejoice, the Lord is King as we offer up our hearts and voice in joy before the Lord. The next hymn, Come Ye Souls, is an invitation as “fruitless” sinners to come to Christ through the cross to trust Him and rejoice in Him and respond in happy obedience.The Old Testament Reading from Psalm 16 reminds us that fullness of joy is found only in the presence of the Lord God. The Prayer of Confession continues this theme from Psalm 51. Our sin causes separation from the joy of the Father, and only through confession and His great mercy demonstrated through Christ and His redeeming work on the cross can our joy be restored.

With Jesus, I am Resting, Resting we acknowledge the joy of Christ as our only rest and place of true peace. Communion brings us to sing of our fairest Lord Jesus who is our soul’s glory, joy and crown. We conclude by singing Jesus, I My Cross Have Taken as a fitting close to this series of abiding in Christ, following Him at all costs, and looking onward to the immense joy of seeing Him in glory.
