Worship Notes for Sunday, June 30, 2013
We return this morning to Luke 11 and the realty of the spiritual dimension of life and the only means and source of true change. From Psalm 68 we have our Call to Worship ascribing power to God as the One who rides in the ancient heavens and give strength to His people. We then move to A Mighty Fortress as our hymn of praise reminding us of the prince of darkness and the strength to defeat him that comes from Christ alone.All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name again situates all majesty and kingship on the Lord Jesus Christ. The New Testament Reading from Luke 10 has Jesus telling his followers that they have been given authority over all the power of the enemy. The Prayer of Confession from Ephesians 6 confronts our sin as that which undermines our effectiveness in the struggle against the spiritual forces of evil. As we sing May the Mind of Christ My Savior, we are prayerfully desiring that the focus of our hearts and minds would be on Christ’s Kingdom such that we would become conformed to His image.
In the Hymns of Communion we return to Psalm 68 as we sing Let God Arise With All His Might as the defender of the helpless and the vanquisher of the foe. In Not What My Hands Have Done, we consider the unique and necessary work of Christ to “ease this weight of sin.”
Our final hymn is For All the Saints as a triumphal reminder of where Christ in His love and power are leading His people in victory over the world, the flesh and the devil and into eternal glory.
