Worship Notes for Sunday, June 23, 2013
We’re pleased this morning to welcome Sam Taaffe, the new RUF minister for MTSU. Sam is preaching from Philippians 4 on the Secret of Contentment. The service this morning walks through the idea of true contentment, the ways in which we try to find satisfaction apart from God, and the great provision of our Father to provide all that we need.We begin with the Call to Worship from Isaiah 55 and our thirst and need, God’s great provision, but also our proclivity to find satisfaction apart from the true bread. We continue by singing Come Christians, Join to Sing and I Will Glory in My Redeemer. Our only comfort and security is the Lamb who is our righteousness.
The New Testament Reading from II Corinthians 12 reminds us that we can only boast of our weakness for His grace is sufficient in our weaknesses and His power is made perfect through them. The Prayer of Confession from Philippians 4 strikes at our desire for gain and for envy and dissension. But the Gospel brings righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, and gentleness.
We continue by singing Speak O Lord as a prayer to be fed and to be satisfied on the Word of God. Our Communion Hymns, Psalm 132: Arise, O Lord and Rock of Ages both speak to our need for Christ with nothing in our hands that we can bring. Contentment will never come from our own efforts, gifts, or possessions.
Our final hymn, All for Jesus, sets before us the beauty of Christ transforming all of our thoughts, words, and doings for His glory instead of the emptiness of the “gilded toys of dust” with which we too often try to find satisfaction. May God be so pleased that we would glory in our Redeemer alone in worship this morning.
