Worship Notes for Sunday, July 1, 2012
Psalm 32 brings us to repentance and what it means to “not cover” our iniquities. We begin with the Call to Worship from Psalm 108 and the recognition of the greatness of our God and His glory. We continue by singing Psalm 100: All People That On Earth Do Dwell and of the goodness and mercy of the Lord God.Our next hymn, Comfort, Comfort Ye My People, speaks of the comfort for those who sit in darkness beneath the load of sin and the coming Kingdom that brings glory and repentance. The Old Testament Reading from Isaiah 59 reminds us of the separation that exists between God and the people due to sin and its defilement. It also states the coming of the Redeemer who will bring salvation and righteousness.
The Prayer of Confession from Ephesians 4 emphasizes our sin against God in our misplaced affections and where we set our hearts. We then sing Blest is the Man from Psalm 32 reminding us of the blessing that comes from pardoned guilt when we confess our sins.
The hymns of Communion include Come Ye Sinners and From Depths of Woe that both speak of confession, sin, and the salvation that comes from God alone. Our final hymn is Holy, Holy, Holy and the triune majesty and purity of the “merciful and mighty God in three persons.”
