Worship Notes for Sunday, June 3, 2012
We set off on an adventure in the Psalms this summer with one of my favorites—Psalm 1. As you know, we regularly utilize the Psalms in our worship from readings to singing. John Calvin expressed reverence for the Psalms in these words: Wherefore, although we look far and wide and search on every hand, we shall not find better songs nor songs better suited to that end than the Psalms of David which the Holy Spirit made and uttered through him. And for this reason, when we sing them we may be certain that God puts the words, in our mouths as if Himself sang in us to exalt His glory.This morning we will sing of the blessed like of walking in the way of wisdom found in God’s Word. We begin with the Call to Worship from Psalm 34 and the call to bless and praise the Lord for all are blessed who take refuge in Him. We continue by singing Psalm 72, Jesus Shall Reign and Psalm 89, My Song Forever. We sing of faithfulness and God’s truth and grace and the steadfastness of His Word.
The Old Testament Reading is from Proverbs 3 and the blessing of wisdom and understanding as life to the soul and a secure path. In the Prayer of Confession, we are confronted with the reality that we turn away from God, see our own paths, and try to walk in our own strength.
The Sung Response to the sermon is a picture of the Psalm 1 believer from verse 3 of Come Ye Souls—Blessed are the eyes that see Him. Blest the ears that hear His voice; Blessed are the souls that trust Him, And in Him alone rejoice: His commandments then become their happy choice. Our final hymn is O Put Your Trust in God with the call to “Walk in His strength with faith and hope…And rest on His unchanging Word.”
