Worship Notes for Sunday, January 15, 2012
With joy this day we celebrate the one-year anniversary of Cornerstone Pres. On January 16, 2011, we began meeting as a church plant. God has been gracious in this past year, and we look expectantly to how He will grow and shape us in the years to come. In addition, we start back into our series on the Gospel of Luke with the opening verses of Luke’s account of the lie and ministry of Jesus. This morning we focus on the things that were taught and the certainty we have in the truth of the Gospel and God’s Word.The Call to Worship from Psalm 71 reminds us that God has taught us from our youth and that we will proclaim His might, power and righteousness to successive generations for our hope is continual. How Firm a Foundation speaks of the firm foundation for our faith that God has established in His Word and the certainty of His promise to never forsake us. The New Testament Reading from 2 Peter 1 addresses the writing of Scripture from the perspective of “eyewitnesses of his majesty” and the fact that men spoke from God by the Holy Spirit.
The Prayer of Confession from 2 Timothy 3 and 4 reminds us that we do not always firmly believe what we have been taught and it is far too easily to desire the “easy news” instead of the “Good News” that carries with it teaching and correction and wisdom for salvation that was breathed out by God. We respond by singing Let Children Hear the Mighty Deeds—a versification of Psalm 78 that echoes the themes of “learning in God alone” that our “hope securely stands.” Our second Communion Hymn is My Faith Has Found a Resting Place.
We conclude the service singing The Church’s One Foundation which serves not only as a reminder of our first year together as a congregation, but the eternal nature of the Word, the Bride of Christ, and the path to which God has called us that we may walk in the certainty of His truth and promises.
