This morning as we start in Luke 7, we see the story of the Centurion whose position and understanding of authority gives him a perspective of humility and great faith in Christ who has complete and ultimate authority. In the Call to Worship from Psalm 147 we read of the juxtaposition of the Lord’s gathering of outcasts and healing the wounded with His authority to make and name the stars. He is “abundant in power” and He “lifts the humble.” We continue by singing Crown Him With Many Crowns and At the Name of Jesus—“For all wreaths of empire meet upon His brow and our hearts confess Him King of Glory now.”
The Prayer of Confession from Psalm 81 reminds us that the Lord delivers us and relives our burdens, but that our stubborn hearts still want to follow our own desires and refuse to submit to His authority. But God would have us feed on the finest of wheat and honey from the Rock. We respond by singing Speak, O Lord with the desire that we would feed on the Word and that it would be deeply planted in our hearts such that “by faith we’ll walk and You walk with us.”
Our second Communion Hymn is Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus. Our final hymn is Ye Servants of God which speaks of the victorious name of Christ and God who is “almighty to save” but whose personal presence we have. “Then let us adore and give Him His right, All glory and power and wisdom and might!”
